Project on Discourse and Ideology



This long-term, multidisciplinary project systematically investigates the relations between discourse and ideology, one of the fundamental dimensions of Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), given the assumption that ideologies are largely acquired and changed through discourse. The arguments in favor of this project were multiple. First of all, it was intended as one of my contibutions to the foundations of CDS. Secondly, it provided a more general basis for the study of racist ideologies. Thirdly, the study of ideology throughout the ages (from Destutt de Tracy, Marx-Engels, Lukacs, Gramsci, Althusser, etc.) had been especially the work of socially interested philosophers, until today, for instance in terms of 'false consciousness' and related vague terms that hardly were up to date within contemporary scholarship. Indeed, the social-cognitive nature of ideologies as forms of social cognitions shared by social groups was rather generally ignored, even in social psychology. And although many scholars in critical and social discourse studies had often been engaged in the study of ideology, they did not develop a new theory of ideology that could account for the role of discourse in the reproduction of racism. After several articles (see below) I finally decided to start the publication of a series of monographs that would systematically deal with ideology, first in quite general, multidisciplinary terms, then, in later volumes, specifically on ideology and social cognition, ideology and society, and finally on ideology and discourse. Because of the close relations between ideology and knowlede as forms of social cognition, the second monograph on ideology and social cognition was delayed because of the necessity to first account for the fundamental role of knowledge and discourse - which however became a major other project. After completing that project on discourse and knowledge, I hope to continue the series of monographs on discourse and ideology.
