Discourse and Knowledge

This multidisciplinary project systematically investigates the relations between discourse and knowledge. Firstly, the epistemological foundation of the project will consist of a new definition of knowledge in terms of belief consensus in epistemic communities and knowledge attribution in discursive contexts. Secondly, the cognitive theory focuses on a typology of knowledge and on the strategies of the acquisition, activation, application and change of knowledge in text processing. It will be investigated whether and how knowledge management in text processing is controlled by a special knowledge device in the mental context models of the speech participants. Thirdly, the linguistic and discourse analytical part of the project will investigate the structures and strategies at all levels of text and talk, especially those of local and global meaning, that manifest these forms knowledge management: presuppositions, implications, etc. Fourthly, if knowledge is defined as a form of social cognition, also the social dimension of knowledge management needs to be investigated, especially for public discourse in education, science and the media, involving both interactional and institutional aspects of knowledge distribution as well as strategies of power and legitimization. Finally, the cultural aspects of the relations between discourse and knowledge will be investigated, such as the notion of (cultural) Common Ground as the basis of all (discourse) comprehension and interaction in given cultures -- defined as epistemic communities.

Discurso y Conocimiento

En este proyecto multidisciplinario se investigan sistemáticamente las relaciones entre discurso y conocimiento. Primero, la fundación epistemológica del proyecto consiste de una nueva definición del conocimiento como consenso de creencias en comunidades epistémicas y en términos de la atribución de conocimiento en contextos discursivos. Segundo, la teoría cognitiva enfoca sobre una tipología del conocimiento y sobre las estrategias de la adquisición, la activación, la aplicación, y el cambio de conocimiento en el procesamiento del texto. Se investigará si y cómo el manejo del conocimiento en el procesamiento del texto se controla por un dispositivo en los modelos del contexto de los participantes del discurso. Tercero, en la parte lingüística y discursiva del proyecto se investigan las estructuras y estrategias a todos los niveles del discurso, especialmente las del sentido local y global que manifiestan el manejo del conocimiento: presuposiciones, implicaciones, etc. Cuarto, si el conocimiento se define como una forma de cognición social, también las dimensiones sociales del manejo de conocimiento necesitan ser investigadas, especialmente para el discurso público en la educación, la ciencia, y los medios, involucrando tanto los aspectos interactivos e institucionales de la distribución del conocimiento, como las estrategias de poder y de legitimación. Finalmente, se investigarán los aspectos culturales de las relaciones entre discurso y conocimiento, así como la noción de Common Ground cultural como la base de toda comprensión discursiva y de la interacción en las culturas definidas como comunidades epistémicas.
